Alberto Garcia laid to rest

BAKERSFIELD - Family, friends and fellow soldiers gathered Friday to remember PFC Alberto Garcia Jr.

The 23-year-old soldier died March 13 from wounds suffered in an attack on his unit by enemy fire and an explosive device. An hour later, he died.

Hundreds went to Valley Bible Fellowship on East Brundage Lane to pay tribute to a young soldier whose memory will live on long after Friday’s burial.

Under clear sunny skies, they went to remember a young man who believed in the cause of freedom.

“I’ve seen a lot of that in him,” said Carlos Trujillo, friend of Garcia’s, “and that’s what I wanted to be .. it’s what we should all be.”

Among the supporters were the patriotic riders who held flags and led the motorcade.

A bagpiper played and an honor guard lead Garcia’s casket.

His family and friends spoke of his strong faith, honesty, toughness, and sincerity, but he also had a lighter side.

“His sense of humor. He was a great guy, a funny guy,” said Renee Luna, Garcia’s friend.

Following the motorcade to the cemetery, scores of people attended the dedication before the burial.

During the time he was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, Bronze Star, and Purple Heart as part of the 26th Infantry Regiment.

“This young soldier has made the ultimate sacrifice that all … may have to make in defense of their country,” said Dep. Cmdr. 40th Infantry Div. Brig. Gen. John Harrel.

Garcia was posthumously promoted to the rank of specialist.
